Lebanese Women: From Political Participation to Party Leadership
In the present study, the author examines the status of women in political parties in Lebanon. The study serves as a key resource for deepening understanding of women’s political engagement and the challenges they face. The aim of the study is to support efforts to strengthen the role of women in political and party life as key stakeholders in decision-making processes, and to contribute to the development of effective solutions to the broader challenges facing Lebanon. The study focuses on political parties as the primary gateway to political engagement in Lebanon, recognizing their critical role in promoting women’s participation and representation in political life, and in advancing gender equality in both the political arena and society at large.
The study presents data on women’s representation in eight political parties at various levels, including as candidates, party members and leaders, and assesses the extent of women’s participation in decision-making processes. It draws on official data and reliable input from party members and leaders. The study highlights initiatives by political parties to enhance women’s involvement in their activities, identifies opportunities and challenges faced by women in political parties, and assesses access and support mechanisms. It also reviews internal party policies, including those aimed at promoting gender equality, and articulates the priorities and demands expressed by women party members. Finally, the study proposes strategies that parties may adopt to create a more enabling environment for women’s political engagement and concludes with a number of recommendations for advancing women’s political participation in Lebanon.
