Humanitarian Appeal for the Protection of Civilians in Lebanon from War

Date:

We, the members of the Women’s Peacebuilding Network in Lebanon, strongly condemn the ongoing war that jeopardizes every facet of life in our country. We emphasize the urgent necessity for immediate action to ensure:

  1. Adherence to the principles of international humanitarian law.
  2. The protection of civilians, particularly women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities, while ensuring the right to dignity for all.
  3. Support for women's needs and the empowerment of women's organizations, enhancing their crucial role in fostering family and community cohesion during and after the conflict.
  4. Safeguarding women and girls, especially in the context of forced displacement and the loss of dignified livelihoods.
  5. The protection of hospitals, medical facilities, and their personnel, as well as humanitarian organizations and health institutions and their personnel.
  6. The preservation of cultural and educational centers, heritage sites, religious institutions, media outlets, and journalists.

In light of these pressing concerns, we call upon the international community, the United Nations, and human rights organizations to take immediate and decisive action to protect civilians.

We urge a commitment to the principles of international humanitarian law, reinforcing the Geneva Conventions, which unequivocally prohibit the targeting of civilians and vital cultural sites. Swift responses are essential to ensure humanitarian aid is provided and reaches those in need.

Lebanon deserves peace.
