UN Women Launches Phase 1 of Workshop Series in Collaboration with the Lebanese Armed Forces

Beirut - September 12 - As part of the ongoing collaboration between UN Women and the Lebanese Armed Forces, the first phase of a year-long series of workshops, spanning from September 2024 to September 2025, has been launched, they aim to enhance the integration of female soldiers into the various units of the Lebanese Armed Forces.

These workshops aim to raise women participants’ awareness of the Women, Peace and Security agenda and enhance their knowledge of Lebanon’s National Action Plan for the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. They also seek to foster a culture that supports the prevention of and response to domestic violence, with a focus on developing women and men participants’ leadership skills. Through these efforts, the Lebanese Armed Forces and UN Women in Lebanon seek to foster an inclusive work environment that enables men and women to contribute effectively to security and defense missions.

 

The workshops were inaugurated at the Radisson Blu Hotel, in Verdun, Beirut, with welcoming remarks by Brigadier General Marwa Saoud, Head of the Gender Unit in the Lebanese Armed Forces, and Ms. Gielan Elmessiri, UN Women Representative in Lebanon. The remarks addressed the overall objectives of the workshops and their importance in building a more inclusive and gender-sensitive military environment, enhancing the ability of men and women to contribute equally to security and defense. UN Women renews its full support to the Lebanese Armed Forces in its journey towards enhancing the role of women in the military sector, in compliance with the Lebanese Constitution and international agreements ratified by Lebanon related to the empowerment of women and the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence against them.
